- Towable RVs are either mounted on or towed by a motor vehicle. These can vary from conventional travel trailers to folding camping trailers. And with recent manufacturing improvements, some of these trailers can even be towed by your family car.
- Motorized RVs are those designed to provide fully contained temporary living quarters. There are three classes within this RV designation.
- Class A is the largest and most expensive type of motorized RV. They can be as long as 45 feet and, with most having some type of slide-out, offer the roomiest accommodations.
- Class B, often known as a camper van, is the smallest RV class. They’re the cheapest of the three motorized RV classes, but what you make up for in price you lose in size and available amenities.
- Class C is a smaller version of the Class A but a larger version of the Class B. Some have a slide-out like the Class As and most can comfortably sleep up to 8 people.
- Park Model RVs are designed to look like a home and are meant to stay in one campground for an extended period of time. They often have full sized appliances and are designed for long-term accommodations.
RV Insurance Coverages
The type of RV that you own and the way that you’re using that RV will determine what RV insurance coverages that you need. For Towable RVs and Motorized RVs, many of the same coverages available on your Auto policy would be available for your RV policy. These include Liability, Collision and Comprehensive coverages. But for Park Models and for some Class A RVs, coverages more in line with your Homeowners policy would be recommended. Some of these extra RV coverages include:
- Vacation Liability provides coverage for you if someone is injured while on your campsite. This coverage is intended for those who are using their RV as a permanent residence.
- Personal Effects coverage protects your personal property stored in your RV. Most carriers pay the replacement cost of your items rather than the current value.
- Emergency Expense coverage will reimburse you for temporary living expenses if your RV becomes disabled as a result of a covered loss. Most carriers provide this coverage for free for Full-Time RVers.
